My Learning Profile
I learn best when I have a better view of the whiteboard, trying to avoid people who bother me in class and doing activities in class. The reason why I chose having a better view of the whiteboard is because it's really annoying to turn around my back to actually see the whiteboard like currently in science class. In my science class, I have to stay in that same spot for around three weeks until we change seats. I chose trying to avoid people who bother me in class because they sometimes get me into trouble. For example, in fourth grade, I was sitting next to a boy called Richard from Sweden and he really bothered me a lot. "The fellow who thinks he knows it all is especially annoying to those of us who do." a quote by Harold Coffin, a former humor columnist who died. I chose doing activities because I'm much of a kinesthetic learner which means I like moving around. In health class, we did filled out a survey that tells us what kind of learner we are. I am a kinesthetic learner, visual learner, and an auditory learner. It would be nice when the class can play some games at the end of the class. Since my profile is A, I think that I learn best by focusing on the details. When I asked my parents about this, my parents don't really think that my profile is A. I strongly disagree that my profile is A.
I need to concentrate in classes and try not to be silly. I chose concentrating in classes because it can let me focus. People bother me sometimes so I try to avoid sitting next to them or I just don't answer them. Focusing can help my learning in school. "If something is bothering you, keep it to yourself. " a quote by David Strickland, an actor. "When something is bothering me, I write a song that tells my feelings." a quote by Loretta Lynn, an American actress. Trying not to be silly can be really useful for me because sometimes I fool around in classes. For example, once I fooled around in my mandarin class with Cameron and Viet until we got into trouble. For me, I try to avoid getting into trouble so that I don't get scolded. So here is what I need to do in classes. I also need to be positive, and have the balance between arts, music, freeform movement, and interpersonal skills. I'm mostly positive all the time at school and other places. I don't really think my profile is A because I do have an integrative balance of art, music, freeform movement, etc. The instruments I play are bass clarinet, alto saxophone, piano, and drums. I practice around five times a week with my instruments. I do freeform movement at my house. I sometimes play soccer, basketball, and badminton with my father and my little brother. Everyday, I have to exercise because I have a foot problem called plantar faciitis which is a heel pain. That's why there are pads inside my shoe which makes my heel more comfortable. I need to improve my balance of art because I don't really paint, draw, etc in my apartment.
The strategies that would help me in my learning would be always follow instructions, listen carefully what the teachers say and be positive all the time. I chose following instructions because I don't follow the instructions rarely since the people bother me. Once, when my mandarin class was making moon cakes, I didn't really listen to the instructions so I messed up my moon cake. It looked like a huge blob full of paste. The purpose why I chose listening carefully what the teachers say is because this is one of the troubles that I get in classes. In fourth grade, I was doing science with Mr. Ward and he told the class about some information and suddenly, he asked me a question. I wasn't really paying attention to Mr. Ward so I stumbled. Finally, I chose being positive because sometimes I am negative. I often in a bad negative mood when I get bad grades in Powerschool, etc. But as time past by, I am starting to get better each day because I'm using the strategies.
I would like my teachers to know this about me so that they can help my learning. They can also make me have a good view of the whiteboard, change seats, etc. By doing this, they can help me get better in school. I hope that the teachers can know my strengths and what I need to improve on. I hope you enjoyed my blog post!

Collaborative Literature Circle
In humanities, the class worked with a partner to do their 3rd literature circle. My partner was ZIFAN, and the book we were discussing about is Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. In my previous blog post, I have talked about the novel, Hatchet. In the third literature circle, me and Zifan had some challenges, etc.
1.The benefits of working with a classmate.
The benefits with working with a classmate is the amount of work you have to do, and the feedback the partner gives to you. The reason why I chose the amount of work is because the amount of work is decreased since you are working with a partner. For example, I had to do one each for the passage, question, response, connection, and the vocabulary. Since there is a collaborative literature circle, the amount of time you spend on the computer can be decreased. I work on my literature circle around 2 hours on my computer. After all, the collaborative literature has decreased my time to 1 hour and 15 minutes! The final benefit is the feedback. It's good to give feedback to each other because we all don't want to have bad grades, and you can use the feedback from your partner for your literature circle. For example, Zifan has given me feedback for my connection. So here benefits that you can have if you are doing a collaborative literature circle.
2. Challenges / obstacles which you overcame (tried to overcome).
Although there are benefits for the collaborative literature circle, there are also challenges that you have to overcome. The challenges in a collaborative literature circle is that the person might not do their work such as "dying ducks in a thunderstorm", and the support the partner gives you. I chose "dying ducks in a thunderstorm" because if person is left out or hasn't done their work, he/she will ruin the other person's grades. Recently, I have heard that Mrs. N has received e-mails from people saying that their partner isn't doing anything. I've experienced that before in my practice literature circle that was collaborative. My group members were Radhika, Jake, and Harry. My group members all worked hard and made their best effort except for Harry. Harry had only done a paragraph for the entire practice literature circle! The next challenge is the support your partner gives you. The reason why I chose this challenge is because if the person doesn't give you feedback or the help you need, you will eventually get bad grades. I think that the expectation for the literature circles should be from B+ to A+. For example, I was stuck on my connection and my questions so I asked my partner, Zifan for help on chat. Unfortunately, he didn't help me but only gave me the feedback for my question! Later, it took around 30 minutes to make my connection even better. So here are my reason why I have chosen these challenges.
3. New understandings that you gained about the novel.
The new understandings that I gained in the novel is that the secret Brian had. The reason why I chose the secret that Brian had was that this relates to how Brian's mother divorced with his father. I also think that this topic is suitable for a passage, question, and maybe a connection. For example, for my question, I put that relates to the "Secret" in my third literature circle. There are other new understandings that I had such as the fire, the food supply, and the porcupine. So here are the understandings that I gained in the novel.
Below, here's Hatchet, the book!

Literature Circle Blog Post
In humanities class, we do literature circles which is like a discussion group. I'm currently reading a novel called Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. My group members are Michelle, Mike, and Olivia. In literature circles, we discuss about the connections we had, shared some of the questions we had, and we wrote two important passages from the chapter.
How your groups discussion helped your understanding of the novel?
My groups discussion has helped me understand the novel better because I get to know what my group members opinions are and their point of view. We all have crazy ideas to share about the book, questions, etc. Some of the vocabulary in Hatchet are a bit difficult so my group members help me to understand better what the word means such as spasm.
Connections
The connections that I had in the discussion was that I've once sat on the copilot's seat before at an airforce in boyscouts. I rode at the copilots seat in an aeroplane when I was in fourth grade. There were so many controls that I felt dizzy. So that was my first time on a copilots seat. This is a connection because Brian has also sat on a copilot's seat. My other connection is I've had a dream once when I was on a plane on the copilot's seat while I found the pilot fainted. I quickly took over his spot and controlled the plane. I turned on the transmission and asked for help but there was no answer. Suddenly, the gas in the plane started to decrease until the plane was about to crash. "AAAHHH!" I shouted. I was awaken by my mother who turned on the lights. This relates to the actions of what Brian did on the plane.
Predictions
One of the predictions that I will have is that Brian will survive in the Canadian wilderness. Here are some reasons why. Brian can survive in the Canadian wilderness because he has a hatchet and a windbreaker. He could use the hatchet to hunt animals, etc. A windbreaker helps because it makes you feel cozy and warm. I think there are some advantages that Brian can survive in the Canadian wilderness.

Why New Guineans are not Wealthier than New Zealand and Australia
There are two reasons why I think New Guinea is not wealthier and technologically advanced than Australia and New Zealand. I chose time and energy, the amount of food the countries have, and where they're from.
First, I chose time and energy because the people are mostly use their time and energy to feed themselves. The men would hunt down animals and the women would gather the plants such as a taro root which has less protein than wheat. Sometimes they would have to eat spiders since the people didn't have a stable food supply. The New Guinean people domesticate only pigs which only gives the people meat. But in Australia and New Zealand, the people domesticate cows, sheep, goats for different reasons. They might use it for clothing, milk, and the meat.
Second, I chose the amount of food the countries have because the New Guineans are so focused in surviving not trying to make new things such as metal tools. New Guineans doesn't have a stable food supply but New Zealand and Australia does have a stable food supply. Australia and New Zealand have a larger area so they can easily find food. But for the New Guineans, they have a smaller area. New Guinea has a 462,840 sq. km of land, almost the size of California. Australia has a 7.69 million square kilometres of the land. Unfortunately, New Zealand has a land area of 268,000 square kilometers, less than New Guinea.
Finally, I chose where the people are from because New Guineans are Asian, but New Zealand and Australians are Europeans. That's why the flags of New Zealand and Australians has the Great Britain flag. In New Zealand, there was lot's of trading going on from Europe and North America. Europeans were the ones that had the most cargo so they got most of the cargo. The people traded for metal tools, artifacts, food, etc. Back in the old times, Europeans were a huge strong army, but the Asians were not wealthier than the Europeans. The Asians didn't have a stable food supply, but the Europeans were able not starve. As time went by, Asians are starting to have a stable food supply and a good life.
So these are my reasons why I think that New Guineans are not wealthier than New Zealand and Australia. As I said before, New Guineans are not wealthier than New Zealand and Australia because they don't have a stable food supply, the place they are from, and the people are too focused on survival.

The Marvelous Adventure of Tim the Mud Skipper
Once upon a time, there was a mud skipper named Tim, which is me. I am an anxious mud skipper who has thanatophobia. I live in a muddy mangrove planting area along with my friend, Matty, a fiddler crab who would sort out my problems. Matty and I have been friends for 3 years, but unfortunately, that friendship was crushed by the humans.
Until one day, 6A ISKL students came along to plant a mangrove seed. Matty and I were hiding beside a mangrove tree and discussing about this issue. My heart was pounding heavily and I was hesitating. I was afraid of the humans. I always had nightmares of being squashed by humans. Matty gave a pat on my back and said "It will be alright. If you stay here, the humans won't even spot us!"In a blink of an eye, Matty was blown up to tiny pieces by a sixth grader that smashed him. I was totally freaked out. I couldn't take it anymore. Later on, I put Matty inside a pond and said my farewells. I was totally shocked that I lost my best friend.
After that unfortunate event, I came out of the small pond and went to rescue the fiddler crabs and the other mudskippers from chaos. I could see a shadow above his head. There is was, a bottom that was about to squish me. "Atomic bottom people! Run away! You are about to get squished!" I shouted. I evacuated the fiddler crabs and the other mudskippers into a bunch of mangrove trees. Thousands of fiddler crabs and mudskippers were crushed into little pieces. I went to save some more fiddler crabs and mudskippers that were on the muddy battle field. I could hear a discussion going on inside a black boot. The mudskippers and fiddler crabs were safe from the impact! I went out and searched for tiny insects for my lunch. "Mmmm. Tasty!" I said as I gobbled up the cricket that was found near a mangrove tree.
Next, I confidently was face to face against the humans. I now wasn't afraid of the humans since they were helping the environment and saving my home. "Look guys! There's a mudskipper! It's so cute!" a female sixth grade student said. "Let's crush it into smithereens!" the boys were chanting. I was running as fast as I could. There was a chill below my spine. I felt doom coming by. "Squish" a boy stepped on me with his boots. I was now in heaven like the others. Silence was in the air. The whole town made a grave for me for being a heroe of the town. Mudskippers are fish that could actually walk! This unique fish can actually can climb trees! To defend themselves, they dig through mud, making a hole to be safe from predators such as us, humans, frogs, reptiles, and birds. In China, they make a soup out of mudskippers!

Cyber bullying
In middle school, on September 20th, 2010, we did a bullying workshop with Mrs. Thompson. Here is my experience with cyber bullying. In fifth grade, an incident happened when my friend, Matt (Not real name) and Cookie (Not real name) sent an inappropriate message from a teacher's account. I couldn't believe that my best friend, Matt could ever do such a thing. The news started to spread out to all of the students in fifth grade.
"There are good people and bad people in this world," from a movie called The Series of Unfortunate Events. I normally say that quote to people who were bullied in my class. Matt has been friends with me for 4 years! He would never do such a thing. Later on, the principal and the assistant principal came to the whole fifth grade and asked who would do such a thing. Matt bravely rose up from his seat. He knew that he did a terrible thing. He confidently went to the principal’s office and was told that he was banned from using panther apps for a year. Matt told the whole story to me and I felt quite sorry for him. Cookie was the criminal that was behind it! Cookie typed up the message and put Matt's name on it! From that day, I was more aware of cyber bullying from that day on...
I would be aware of cyber bullying and how that can affect people’s feelings. Cyber bullying can make people feel terrible, angry, etc. "A cyber bully may be engaged in defamation. This is when the bully causes harm to someone’s reputation by spreading false information about that person. In general, defamation that appears temporarily (as unrecorded speech or in a live broadcast) is called slander, and defamation that appears permanently (in a book or on a Web site) is called libel." - From the Civil Law. A civil law is a law that deals with rights, dignity, and freedom from injury. Many countries are aware of cyber bullying such as Canada. Section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms explain about freedom of expression from cyber bullying.
Finally, I would like to recommend you some safe useful tips doing with cyber bullying. In your mail, click on "New! Priority Inbox Beta" (which is in red color). Click on learn more and you will watch a short video what "priority inbox" does. It's really useful. It makes two separate piles. Priority inbox picks the important messages that you receive. My second goal to make people feel welcomed is to don't chat to people who aren't familiar with you. What I usually do is blocking them or has a conversation with a teacher (if it is continuously). For example, my friend, Cookie asked me about romance. First, I would tell him/her to stop. Second, if it goes on, I would block him/her or tell a teacher. So these are my goals to make people at ISKL to feel safer.
(I've experienced cyber bullying before such as chain mails about death, and saying negative comments to each other.)

Fear of Zeusophobia
The time I showed courage is when I was in fifth grade, my friends and I learned about Ancient Greek Gods, I was fascinated when I came across againist Hades, the god of the dead. Here is what happened and facts about Hades.
Hades, is the god of the dead. He is the son of Cronos(Kronos) and Rhea. When he was a baby, Cronos swallowed Hades, etc, except for Zeus, because he's the final child. His symbol is a helmet which was a gift from the cyclopes that helped the three brothers defeat Cronos. Until one day, Rhea disguised Zeus as a stone and when Cronos swallowed the stone, he puked and all the babies came out. Later on, the three gods, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, decided to choose positions. Zeus chose the sky, Poseidon chose the sea, and Hades chose the underworld.
The underworld was divided into two regions. At the very bottom, lay Tartarus, a land of terror. There was also the Titans, that were imprisoned in Tartarus, who were guarded by a giant with 100 arms. The other region is Elysium, or known as Elysium Fields, was a place where people's souls lye. Hades Kingdom is different to his brothers. First, you would have to cross the deadly River Styx, and ride a ferry. Next, you would have to face the Cerberus, the a three-headed dog that's guarding the entrance to Hades Kingdom.
I wasn't afraid of Hades, until when I learned more about him, I was totally freaked out. Facing my fear was a challenging thing to do since I believe in gods/goddesses. I realized that he forced his wife, Peresphone, to marry him. After a few days later, my family watched a movie called Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. The movie was exciting at first, until when Percy Jackson was face to face againist Hades. Besides that, the movie was interesting.
At school, when me and my friends were at the computer, we went to the Percy Jackson website and clicked on "Who's your father?". I crossed my fingers and hoped that a miracle would happen. First my friend, Amr, answered some few questions, and his father was Zeus! The God of the Sky! Next was my turn, I was afraid that my father could've been Hades. Luckily, my father was Poseidon! The God of the Sea! Finally, it was my friend, Marco's turn. Unfortunately, his father was Hades! I couldn't believe it! Marco's father was Hades!
I knew that I wanted to end this fear so I showed courage by dreaming. I was in Hades Kingdom and talked to Hades. I convinced him to go to Mount. Olympus and meet his brothers by talking about me and my little brother. I also taught him a lesson to be much more friendlier since he was lonely. I was so relieved that I stepped up over my fears.
About a year later, I got over with my fear about Hades because I started to learn more about Egyptian gods/goddesses,etc.

What do the artifacts tell us about the lives of early human?
In class, my group researched about a cave painting that was found in Lascaux, France. There were bisons, horses, etc, and a chest left behind. Cave paintings can tell us about lives of early humans because they are like stories, such as a person doing a heroic. This painting is interesting because the artist painted horses like it was running along by painting it in the cave's unbalanced walls. An interesting part is when a group of scientists in Argentina were searching for cave paintings in a cave. But when they were singing, they noticed that the sound was more powerful in the area where they found the cave painting.
Another reason is that about other artifacts about sculptures, etc, it shows how creative early humans were. For the sculptures, the hominids used different tools such as a rock, etc. Not only that, but hominids also made and dug traps for small animals. The hominids are good hunters using spear throwers, stones, etc. Hunting is a big thing for hominids because they could chase horses, bisons, and get the meat and the skin for survival. When hominids found shelter, they started to express their feelings about the world in art and they started to make sculptures.
So artifacts can tell us about the lives of early humans many ways by art, etc. "These artifacts and the blessing they bring are for all the people. This is such a rare opportunity-probably never again in my life time," by archaeologist Noel Lee. Without these artifacts, we wouldn't have a clue of about the lives of early humans.

This is the other part of the cave painting.
These are some sculptures of bisons that were made about 14,000 years ago.

Social Scientist
If I was a social scientist, I would be an archaeologist ( if I get to), because I could see the pyramids in Egypt. I always wanted to some monuments such as the Great Sphinx, the Valley of the Kings, etc. I have read this book called The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan, it explains about Egyptian gods and goddess such as Bast, the cat goddess, etc.
The first reason why I am interested in being an archaeologist is that I could dig up dinosaur bones or fossils. Once when I was at a beach, I found this cool fossil but my parents told me to leave it there. But it looked like a prehistoric sea creature.
My second reason is because it's a good experience. It may be tiring, but it's fun because I used to dig often when I was in kindergarten. Once I have found this particular interesting bone when I went to a beach. I showed it to my little brother and he was just amazed.
Finally, my last reason is because it was one of my dream when I was in kindergarten. I used to play with dinosaur toys. Once, my best friend bought me an encyclopedia about dinosaurs and I sat all day reading it! I especially liked the Tyrannosaurus Rex.

My First Blog Entry
Greetings people around the world! My name is Shin Young and my nationality is South Korea. I have a younger sibling in fourth grade. My birthday is in April 2nd after April fools day! I like middle school because of the food compared to the elementary school, and the teachers are nice.
I've read these following books over the summer: The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, The Diary of a Wimpy Kid #2 by Jeff Kinney, and Awesome Archaeology by Nick Arnold. The Invention of Hugo Cabret is about a boy called Hugo Cabret who is trying to fix his father's invention in a subway station.
The last movie I have seen was Eclipse. The movie Eclipse is about a mortal girl called Bella, a male vampire called Edward, and a werewolf called Jacob all negotiate (even though they are enemies) to fight off the evil vampire villains who are trying to kill Bella. I would like to recommend the movie Twilight rather than Eclipse.
My academic goal is to get all A's on my report card. That's why I have to be more concerned about how oraganized I am, etc. My social goal is to make new friends and chat with my friends.
My favourite vacation is when my family went to Thailand with my grandparents. We went sight-seeing, trying out food, collecting souvenirs, etc. I've also made a friend there called Charlie. He is from Thailand and is our tour guide. I had lots of fun in Thailand!
The five adjectives that describe me are intelligent, strong, impatient, kind, and brave.

This is a spicy soup called Tom Yam. It has a hot and sour flavor. I have tried it in Thailand. Those of you who love seafood, you should try it out! http://www.realthairecipes.com/wp-content/uploads/tom-yum-goong.jpg |
